IRS Externship Opportunity

Category: News Tags: , April 4, 2012 @ 3:21 pm

The IRS Chief Counsel’s office in St. Paul is seeking students from William Mitchell for Summer and Fall 2012 externships. The work will involve federal and state tax law research and U.S. Tax Court trial preparation. Students who are enrolled at least half time, have taken the basic Income Tax course and are in the top 1/3 of their class are eligible. The externship is for a minimum of 3 credits and requires a minimum of 145 hours of work over the semester. (That’s an average of about 10 hours per week over 14 weeks.) A larger number of hours for more credits may be possible (figure about 50 hours per additional credit).

If you’re interested, please send Prof. Denise Roy a quick e-mail to that effect ASAP and submit your application by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11.  To apply, email the following to Melissa Richard at melissa.richard@wmitchell.edu:  resume, transcript (unofficial is fine), a writing sample and a cover letter addressed to Prof. Roy.  BE SURE TO INDICATE WHETHER YOU ARE APPLYING FOR SUMMER OR FALL OR BOTH.  The tax law faculty will select students to recommend to the Chief Counsel’s office. That office may conduct interviews and will make the final selection. If you have questions, please contact Professor Roy.

If you may be interested in an IRS Chief Counsel’s office externship for semesters after Fall ‘12, send an email to that effect to Prof. Roy so she can notify you when future opportunities arise.

Category: Docket, News Tags: @ 11:33 am

Federal Judicial Externship

A limited number of externship placements are available with federal judges during the Fall 2012 semester. The externship may be taken for 2, 3 or 4 credits (requiring either 100, 150 or 200 work hours during the semester).  The number of credits will depend in part on the preferences of participating judges.  In addition, there is a classroom component during which you will meet with Professor Byrn and complete short writing and other assignments.  Class will generally meet biweekly.

Students must apply to be admitted to the program by sending an email to Karen Vander Sanden at Karen.vandersanden@wmitchell.edu attaching a resume, transcript and carefully composed one-page statement explaining why you want to participate in the program.  The deadline for applications is Thursday, April 12th.  Applications will be reviewed by members of the Judicial Clerkship Committee.  Preference will be given to third-year full-time students who are in the top 15% of their class and who have significant writing experience (for example Law Review, Law Journal or Moot Court). Rising 2Ls may also apply. The Clerkship Committee will forward the application materials of selected applicants to participating judges for final placement and acceptance decisions.  Please note that you will not be notified if you have received an externship until after registration. You should plan to register for a full set of classes without the externship.

2012 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program – Reminder to Register!

Category: News Tags: , February 27, 2012 @ 11:46 am

Loyola University Chicago School of law is hosting the 2012 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday,
August 2 and Friday, August 3
in Chicago, Illinois.  This is a nationwide interview program that
targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs.

Last year roughly 100 employers, 180 law schools, and 1,600 law students from across the country participated in the program.  The program is entirely pre-selected, which
means that students submit resumes and bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the resumes of the students
who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program.  Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the
program.  You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating
in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

For more information on the program and to register, please refer to the
program website at http://www.luc.edu/law/career/patent_students.html.

WMCL will pay student registration fee.

Jenna Yauch-Erickson ‘11 says she’s been walking around in shock for a couple of weeks. The cause of her disbelief: a whirlwind of activity that landed her a coveted federal clerkship less than a month after she heard about the opening.
