William Mitchell College of Law believes that diversity, in all of its forms, benefits the classroom, the college, and the legal profession. And recently, the law school was honored as a recipient of the first Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award, which recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The award comes from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, which focuses on diversity in higher education. Mitchell is one of 48 recipients of the award. Winning institutions were selected based on their diversity and inclusion initiatives, taking into account all aspects of diversity including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBT community.
In selecting HEED winners, the magazine conducted a comprehensive assessment to determine an institution’s level of success regarding diversity and inclusion among its students, suppliers, faculty, and administrative staffs.
Each year, along with multicultural student organizations, Mitchell sponsors diversity-related activities, including Black History Month events, the Cesar Chavez Dinner, the Shabbat and Passover Seder; and the Pride Festival. In addition, the law school’s Office of Multicultural Affairs provides support, encouragement, advice, and learning opportunities to students, faculty, and staff. At Mitchell, diversity is a core value.
The award winners will be featured in the December issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity.
